If you’re learning Chinese, you’ve probably said this sentence hundreds of times:

你好吗?

Nǐ hǎo ma?

How are you?

I hear this from students learning Chinese all the time:

“老师,你好吗?” 😄

And I always want to tell them:

Your Chinese is correct, but it sounds a little too much like a textbook!

In English, “How are you?” is a perfectly normal everyday greeting.

But in Chinese, 你好吗? isn’t nearly as common in casual conversations, especially between friends.

So what should you say instead?

Let’s find out! 👇

Illustrated guide to Chinese greetings beyond 你好吗

❶ Is “你好吗?” Wrong? 🤔

Not at all! ✅

It’s grammatically correct, and Chinese speakers will understand you.

But there’s an important difference:

你好!

Nǐ hǎo!

Hello!

This is a greeting. You can use it when meeting someone or saying hello politely.

你好吗?

Nǐ hǎo ma?

How are you?

This is a question asking how someone is doing.

Both are correct, but 你好吗? can sound a little stiff or textbook-like when used as an everyday greeting.

💡 Remember: You don’t always need to translate the English greeting “How are you?” directly into Chinese.

❷ Just Want to Say Hello? 👋

Keep it simple!

① 你好!

Nǐ hǎo!

Hello!

✅ Great for meeting someone for the first time or greeting someone politely.

② 嗨!

Hāi!

Hi!

✅ Casual and friendly. Perfect for friends!

③ 早!

Zǎo!

Morning!

✅ A short, natural greeting when you see someone in the morning.

See? Sometimes one word is enough! 😄

❸ Haven’t Seen a Friend for a While?

Here are three expressions you can use in real conversations.

⭐ 最近怎么样?

Zuìjìn zěnmeyàng?
How have you been lately?

A natural way to ask someone how things have been going.

For example:

最近怎么样?工作忙吗?

Zuìjìn zěnmeyàng? Gōngzuò máng ma?

How have you been? Busy with work?

⭐ 好久不见!

Hǎojiǔ bú jiàn!
Long time no see!

Use this when you haven’t seen someone for a while.

You can also combine two expressions:

好久不见!最近怎么样?

Hǎojiǔ bú jiàn! Zuìjìn zěnmeyàng?

Long time no see! How have you been?

✅ Perfect for catching up with an old friend!

⭐ 最近忙吗?

Zuìjìn máng ma?
Have you been busy lately?

This is another friendly way to start a conversation.

Unlike 最近怎么样?, this question specifically asks whether someone has been busy.

❹ What About “你还好吗?” ❤️

Be careful! This expression has a different meaning.

你好吗?

Nǐ hǎo ma?

How are you?

你还好吗?

Nǐ hái hǎo ma?

Are you okay?

你还好吗? usually shows concern.

You might say it when someone seems unhappy, tired, or upset.

For example:

你今天不太高兴,还好吗?

Nǐ jīntiān bú tài gāoxìng, hái hǎo ma?

You don’t seem very happy today. Are you okay?

✅ Natural when you’re checking on someone.

💡 Remember: Don’t use 你还好吗? as your default greeting when you simply want to say hello.

❺ Let’s See a Real Conversation! 💬

Imagine meeting a Chinese friend you haven’t seen for a few weeks.

👤 A: 好久不见!最近怎么样?

Hǎojiǔ bú jiàn! Zuìjìn zěnmeyàng?

Long time no see! How have you been?

👤 B: 还好,最近有点忙。你呢?

Hái hǎo, zuìjìn yǒudiǎn máng. Nǐ ne?

I’m okay. I’ve been a bit busy lately. How about you?

👤 A: 我很好,最近不太忙。

Wǒ hěn hǎo, zuìjìn bú tài máng.

I’m good. I haven’t been too busy lately.

Sounds natural, right?

Nobody needed to ask “你好吗?”

Instead, they used expressions that fit the situation and kept the conversation going.
