HSK 1 · VERSION 2.0#2

Negation of “yǒu” with “méi”

没 / 没有

méi / méiyǒu

How it works

When you want to say “do not have” or “there is not,” Chinese uses 没 / 没有, not 不有.

The pattern

Subject + 没(有) + Object

Example sentences

我没有哥哥。

Wǒ méiyǒu gēge.

I do not have an older brother.

今天我没课。

Jīntiān wǒ méi kè.

I do not have class today.

桌子上没有电脑。

Zhuōzi shàng méiyǒu diànnǎo.

There is no computer on the table.

Usage note

没有 is more complete. 没 is shorter and very common in spoken Chinese.
