Placement of Question Words

疑问词位置

yíwèncí wèizhì

How it works

In Chinese, question words usually stay in the same position as the answer would appear in a statement.

Example sentences

你喝茶。

Nǐ hē chá.

Statement: You drink tea.

你喝什么?

Nǐ hē shénme?

Question: What do you drink?

More examples

你去哪儿?

Nǐ qù nǎr?

Where are you going?

他是谁?

Tā shì shéi?

Who is he?

你有几个妹妹?

Nǐ yǒu jǐ ge mèimei?

How many younger sisters do you have?

Usage note

Unlike English, Chinese question words usually do not move to the beginning of the sentence.
