Sentence-Final “le” for a New Situation

了(表示新情况或变化)

le (biǎoshì xīn qíngkuàng huò biànhuà)

How it works

了 at the end of a sentence can show a new situation or change of state. It often means “now…,” “already…,” or “not anymore.”

The pattern

Subject + Predicate + 了

Example sentences

我饿了。

Wǒ è le.

I am hungry now.

天气冷了。

Tiānqì lěng le.

The weather has become cold.

他不是学生了。

Tā bú shì xuésheng le.

He is not a student anymore.

Usage note

This 了 is different from the completed-action 了. Here it shows change.
