Adjectives as Predicates

形容词谓语句

xíngróngcí wèiyǔ jù

How it works

Many Chinese adjectives can serve directly as the predicate. In a neutral positive statement, a degree adverb such as 很 often appears before the adjective; without one, a bare adjective can sound contrastive or context-dependent.

The pattern

Subject + 很 + Adjective

Example sentences

我很忙。

Wǒ hěn máng.

I am busy.

她很漂亮。

Tā hěn piàoliang.

She is very pretty.

汉语很有意思。

Hànyǔ hěn yǒu yìsi.

Chinese is very interesting.

Usage note

The 很 here does not always mean “very.” Often it just makes the sentence sound natural.
