Moderating Positive Adjectives with “hái”

还

hái

How it works

还 can soften a positive adjective and mean “fairly,” “quite,” or “not bad.”

The pattern

Subject + 还 + Adjective

Example sentences

这家饭店还不错。

Zhè jiā fàndiàn hái búcuò.

This restaurant is quite good.

他的汉语还可以。

Tā de Hànyǔ hái kěyǐ.

His Chinese is fairly good.

今天天气还好。

Jīntiān tiānqì hái hǎo.

The weather is quite good today.

Usage note

This 还 does not mean “still.” It means the degree is acceptable or fairly good.
