Comparing “yào” and “xiǎng”

要 vs 想

yào vs xiǎng

How it works

Both 要 and 想 can express desire, but they are not exactly the same.

The difference

想 often sounds softer and more like “would like to” or “want to.” 要 can sound stronger, more direct, or express need.

Example sentences

我想喝茶。

Wǒ xiǎng hē chá.

I would like to drink tea.

我要一杯茶。

Wǒ yào yì bēi chá.

I want a cup of tea.

我想去中国学习。

Wǒ xiǎng qù Zhōngguó xuéxí.

I want to go to China to study.

明天我要去医院。

Míngtiān wǒ yào qù yīyuàn.

I am going to the hospital tomorrow.

Usage note

At HSK2 level, learners should feel that 想 is often softer, while 要 can be stronger or more definite.
