Expressing “When” with “shí”
时
How it works
时 is a more formal or written form of “when,” often seen in set expressions or written Chinese.
Example sentences
小时候，我住在农村。
When I was little, I lived in the countryside.
上课时不要说话。
Do not talk during class.
有问题时可以问老师。
When you have questions, you can ask the teacher.
Usage note
At HSK3 level, learners often meet 小时候, 上课时, and similar fixed forms.
