Expressing “Towards” with “xiàng”

向

xiàng

How it works

向 means “toward” or “to,” often before a person or direction.

The pattern

Subject + 向 + Person / Direction + Verb

Example sentences

他向我点了点头。

Tā xiàng wǒ diǎn le diǎn tóu.

He nodded to me.

我们向前走吧。

Wǒmen xiàng qián zǒu ba.

Let’s walk forward.

她向老师请教问题。

Tā xiàng lǎoshī qǐngjiào wèntí.

She asks the teacher for advice.

Usage note

Compared with 对, 向 often sounds a bit more directional.
