HSK 6 · VERSION 2.0#2

Advanced Usage of the Contrary “dào”

倒

dào

How it works

At HSK6 level, 倒 (dào) is not only used for simple contrast. It often marks a result or attitude that is somewhat unexpected, contrary to assumption, or used to gently shift the speaker’s viewpoint.

It can suggest:

actually

on the contrary

unexpectedly

if you put it that way

In advanced usage, 倒 (dào) often softens the contrast instead of making it sound too direct.

Example sentences

我原以为他会强烈反对,没想到他倒比谁都冷静,甚至还主动提出了解决办法。

Wǒ yuán yǐwéi tā huì qiángliè fǎnduì, méi xiǎngdào tā dào bǐ shéi dōu lěngjìng, shènzhì hái zhǔdòng tíchū le jiějué bànfǎ.

I originally thought he would strongly oppose it, but unexpectedly he was calmer than anyone else and even took the initiative to propose a solution.

你这么一解释,事情倒显得没有刚开始那么复杂了。

Nǐ zhème yì jiěshì, shìqing dào xiǎnde méiyǒu gāng kāishǐ nàme fùzá le.

Once you explain it like that, the matter actually no longer seems as complicated as it did at first.

他说得并不多,可每句话倒都切中了问题的关键。

Tā shuō de bìng bù duō, kě měi jù huà dào dōu qiè zhòng le wèntí de guānjiàn.

He did not say much, but every sentence actually hit the key point of the problem.

Key point

Advanced 倒 (dào) often introduces a nuanced contrast. It is less blunt than 但是 (dànshì) and often sounds more refined in tone.
