Expressing “Only If” with “wéiyǒu”

唯有……才……

wéiyǒu...cái...

How it works

唯有……才…… (wéiyǒu...cái...) means “only if... then...” or “only by...” It is used to emphasize that one and only one condition can make the result possible.

It is more formal and more literary than 只有……才…… (zhǐyǒu...cái...).

Example sentences

唯有真正了解问题的根源,才有可能提出有效而持久的解决办法。

Wéiyǒu zhēnzhèng liǎojiě wèntí de gēnyuán, cái yǒu kěnéng tíchū yǒuxiào ér chíjiǔ de jiějué bànfǎ.

Only by truly understanding the root of the problem can it be possible to propose effective and lasting solutions.

一个人唯有不断修正自己看问题的方式,才能逐渐接近更完整的答案。

Yí ge rén wéiyǒu búduàn xiūzhèng zìjǐ kàn wèntí de fāngshì, cái néng zhújiàn jiējìn gèng wánzhěng de dá’àn.

Only by constantly correcting the way one looks at problems can one gradually approach a more complete answer.

唯有在压力最大的时刻仍能保持理智,才真正说明一个人的成熟。

Wéiyǒu zài yālì zuì dà de shíkè réng néng bǎochí lǐzhì, cái zhēnzhèng shuōmíng yí ge rén de chéngshú.

Only if one can still remain rational at the moment of greatest pressure does that truly show maturity.

Key point

唯有 (wéiyǒu) emphasizes exclusiveness: only this condition works.
