Complement Pattern “-qǐlái”

起来

qǐlái

How it works

As a complement, 起来 (qǐlái) has several advanced functions. It can indicate:

the beginning of an action or state

a movement upward or into an active state

a general impression or evaluation

the collecting or gathering of something into a unified whole

At HSK6 level, its most important uses are abstract and discourse-related.

The pattern

Verb + 起来 (qǐlái)

Example sentences

表面上看起来这只是一个小问题,但真正分析下去,背后牵涉的因素却相当复杂。

Biǎomiàn shàng kàn qǐlái zhè zhǐshì yí ge xiǎo wèntí, dàn zhēnzhèng fēnxī xiàqù, bèihòu qiānshè de yīnsù què xiāngdāng fùzá.

On the surface this looks like only a small problem, but if one really analyzes it further, the factors involved behind it are actually quite complex.

听到这个消息以后,原本安静的会议室一下子热闹起来了。

Tīngdào zhège xiāoxi yǐhòu, yuánběn ānjìng de huìyìshì yíxiàzi rènào qǐlái le.

After hearing this news, the originally quiet meeting room suddenly became lively.

如果把这些零散的现象联系起来看,就会发现它们之间其实存在某种共同规律。

Rúguǒ bǎ zhèxiē língsàn de xiànxiàng liánxì qǐlái kàn, jiù huì fāxiàn tāmen zhījiān qíshí cúnzài mǒu zhǒng gòngtóng guīlǜ.

If these scattered phenomena are linked together and examined, one will discover that there is actually a certain common pattern among them.

Key point

At higher levels, 起来 (qǐlái) is often used in abstract judgment and discourse organization, not just literal direction.
