Expressing “Even More So” with “hékuàng”

何况

hékuàng

How it works

何况 (hékuàng) means “let alone,” “much less,” or “all the more so.” It is used when one situation is already true, and another stronger or more obvious case is therefore even more true.

It often appears in reasoning and argument.

The pattern

Clause 1, 何况 (hékuàng) + Clause 2

Example sentences

Even someone as experienced as he finds it difficult, let alone people like us who have only just entered this field.

这件事对成年人来说都不容易接受,何况年纪还这么小的孩子。

Zhè jiàn shì duì chéngniánrén láishuō dōu bù róngyì jiēshòu, hékuàng niánjì hái zhème xiǎo de háizi.

Even adults find this matter hard to accept, much less children who are still so young.

他平时身体就不太好,最近工作又这么累,何况还连续熬了几天夜。

Tā píngshí shēntǐ jiù bù tài hǎo, zuìjìn gōngzuò yòu zhème lèi, hékuàng hái liánxù áo le jǐ tiān yè.

He is usually not in very good health, and lately his work has been exhausting - not to mention that he has stayed up late for several nights in a row.

Key point

何况 (hékuàng) strengthens an argument by moving from one valid case to an even stronger one.
