How it works

Both can be translated as “according to,” but their usage differs.

根据 (gēnjù) means according to / on the basis of and often introduces evidence, facts, data, or grounds for judgment.

依照 (yīzhào) means according to / in accordance with and often introduces rules, laws, instructions, standards, or formal procedures.

根据目前掌握的数据来看，这种判断并不是没有道理。

Gēnjù mùqián zhǎngwò de shùjù lái kàn, zhè zhǒng pànduàn bìng bú shì méiyǒu dàolǐ.

According to the data currently available, this judgment is not without basis.

我们只能根据已经发生的事实来分析问题，而不能完全依靠想象。

Wǒmen zhǐ néng gēnjù yǐjīng fāshēng de shìshí lái fēnxī wèntí, ér bù néng wánquán yīkào xiǎngxiàng.
