Expressing “Indeed” with “quèshí”

确实

quèshí

How it works

确实 (quèshí) means “indeed,” “certainly,” or “it is true that.” It is used when the speaker wants to confirm that something is objectively true or undeniable.

Compared with 其实 (qíshí), 确实 (quèshí) emphasizes truth or certainty rather than contrast.

Example sentences

你刚才提到的那个问题确实值得我们再认真讨论一下。

Nǐ gāngcái tídào de nàge wèntí quèshí zhídé wǒmen zài rènzhēn tǎolùn yíxià.

The issue you just mentioned is indeed worth our serious discussion again.

这几年他的变化确实很大,连老朋友见了都差点认不出来。

Zhè jǐ nián tā de biànhuà quèshí hěn dà, lián lǎo péngyou jiàn le dōu chàdiǎn rèn bu chūlái.

His changes over the past few years are indeed great; even old friends almost cannot recognize him.

从目前掌握的证据来看,这种解释确实更有说服力。

Cóng mùqián zhǎngwò de zhèngjù lái kàn, zhè zhǒng jiěshì quèshí gèng yǒu shuōfúlì.

Judging from the evidence currently available, this explanation is indeed more convincing.

Key point

确实 (quèshí) is often used when affirming a fact, observation, or judgment.
