Marking a Delayed or Conditioned Result with “cái / fāngcái”

才 / 方才

cái / fāngcái

How it works

才 (cái) can mark that a result occurs only after a condition is met or later than expected. Formal 方才 (fāngcái) can sometimes mean ‘only then,’ although in everyday speech it more commonly means ‘just now.’

The main focus here is the ‘only then’ relationship, most commonly expressed by 才 (cái).

Example sentences

只有把整个问题重新梳理清楚,我们才有可能找到真正有效的解决办法。

Zhǐyǒu bǎ zhěng ge wèntí chóngxīn shūlǐ qīngchu, wǒmen cái yǒu kěnéng zhǎodào zhēnzhèng yǒuxiào de jiějué bànfǎ.

Only after reorganizing and clarifying the whole problem can we find a truly effective solution.

他沉默了很久,才慢慢意识到自己真正害怕的并不是失败本身。

Tā chénmò le hěn jiǔ, cái mànmàn yìshí dào zìjǐ zhēnzhèng hàipà de bìng bú shì shībài běnshēn.

Only after remaining silent for a long time did he slowly realize that what he truly feared was not failure itself.

直到多年以后,他方才明白当年那句话真正想表达的意思。

Zhídào duō nián yǐhòu, tā fāngcái míngbai dāngnián nà jù huà zhēnzhèng xiǎng biǎodá de yìsi.

Only many years later did he finally understand what that sentence had truly meant back then.

Key point

In advanced Chinese, 才 (cái) often marks that a condition, time, or realization is reached only at that point.
