Expressing Contrast with “què”

却

què

How it works

At HSK6 level, 却 (què) is used not just for simple contrast, but often to highlight a result that is especially contrary to expectation, logic, or the speaker’s assumption.

Compared with 但是 (dànshì), 却 (què) is usually more compact and more deeply integrated into sentence structure.

Example sentences

他看上去始终很平静,内心却承受着谁也无法想象的压力。

Tā kàn shàngqù shǐzhōng hěn píngjìng, nèixīn què chéngshòu zhe shéi yě wúfǎ xiǎngxiàng de yālì.

He appeared calm the whole time, yet inside he was bearing pressure that no one could imagine.

原本只是一次普通的讨论,最后却演变成了一场激烈的争论。

Yuánběn zhǐshì yí cì pǔtōng de tǎolùn, zuìhòu què yǎnbiàn chéng le yì chǎng jīliè de zhēnglùn.

What was originally just an ordinary discussion unexpectedly turned into an intense argument.

他明明拥有很多别人羡慕的条件,生活却并没有因此变得轻松。

Tā míngmíng yōngyǒu hěn duō biérén xiànmù de tiáojiàn, shēnghuó què bìng méiyǒu yīncǐ biàn de qīngsōng.

He clearly has many advantages that others envy, yet they have not made his life any easier.

Key point

却 (què) is especially effective in formal writing because it introduces contrast economically and sharply.
