Using “zěnme shuō ne” to Frame a Hesitant Opinion

怎么说呢

zěnme shuō ne

How it works

怎么说呢 literally means "how should I put it?" As a spoken discourse marker, it signals that the speaker is choosing words, softening a judgment, or preparing a nuanced opinion.

Example sentences

他的做法也不能说完全错,只是,怎么说呢,有些地方确实考虑得还不够周全。

Tā de zuòfǎ yě bù néng shuō wánquán cuò, zhǐshì, zěnme shuō ne, yǒuxiē dìfang quèshí kǎolǜ de hái bù gòu zhōuquán.

His approach is not entirely wrong; it is just - how should I put it - not fully thought through in some respects.

他这个人,怎么说呢,表面上看起来很随和,其实对很多事都有自己非常明确的原则。

As for him - how should I put it - he seems easygoing, but he actually has very clear principles about many things.

Key point

This is a discourse marker rather than a content word. It is common in spontaneous speech but usually avoided in polished writing.
