Expressing Contrast with “fǎn’ér”

反而

fǎn’ér

How it works

反而 (fǎn’ér) means “instead,” “on the contrary,” or “contrary to expectation.” It is used when the actual result goes in the opposite direction from what was expected.

Example sentences

我原以为解释清楚以后误会会减少,没想到大家听完之后反而更加怀疑了。

Wǒ yuán yǐwéi jiěshì qīngchu yǐhòu wùhuì huì jiǎnshǎo, méi xiǎngdào dàjiā tīng wán zhī hòu fǎn’ér gèngjiā huáiyí le.

I thought a clear explanation would reduce the misunderstanding, but it unexpectedly made everyone even more suspicious.

休息了几天以后,他的状态并没有好转,反而显得更加疲惫。

Xiūxi le jǐ tiān yǐhòu, tā de zhuàngtài bìng méiyǒu hǎozhuǎn, fǎn’ér xiǎnde gèngjiā píbèi.

After resting for a few days, his condition did not improve; instead, he seemed even more exhausted.

过分强调结果有时候不仅不能提高效率,反而会让人失去原本的判断力。

Guòfèn qiángdiào jiéguǒ yǒu shíhou bùjǐn bù néng tígāo xiàolǜ, fǎn’ér huì ràng rén shīqù yuánběn de pànduànlì.

Overemphasizing results sometimes not only fails to improve efficiency but also undermines independent judgment.

Key point

反而 (fǎn’ér) specifically signals reversal against expectation, not just ordinary contrast.
