HSK 6 · VERSION 2.0#81

Advanced “bèi” Sentences

被字句(高级)

bèi zì jù

How it works

At HSK6 level, 被字句 (bèi zì jù) is not only used for simple passive meaning. Advanced passive structures often highlight:

the effect on the subject

an unwanted or unexpected result

the subject’s lack of control

written or formal passive description

It can also appear with omitted agents when the performer is unknown, unnecessary, or intentionally left vague.

The pattern

Subject + 被 (bèi) + Agent + Verb + Complement or Subject + 被 (bèi) + Verb + Complement

Example sentences

很多真正重要的问题,往往不是被解决掉的,而是被长期掩盖之后才突然集中爆发出来的。

Hěn duō zhēnzhèng zhòngyào de wèntí, wǎngwǎng bú shì bèi jiějué diào de, ér shì bèi chángqī yǎngài zhī hòu cái tūrán jízhōng bàofā chūlái de.

Many truly important problems are often not solved, but rather suddenly erupt only after being covered up for a long time.

这份报告原本只是内部参考材料,后来却不知怎么被传到了外面。

Zhè fèn bàogào yuánběn zhǐshì nèibù cānkǎo cáiliào, hòulái què bù zhī zěnme bèi chuán dào le wàimiàn.

This report was originally only for internal reference, but later somehow got circulated outside.

一个人如果长期被误解,却又无法及时解释清楚,那种压抑是很难真正排解的。

Yí ge rén rúguǒ chángqī bèi wùjiě, què yòu wúfǎ jíshí jiěshì qīngchu, nà zhǒng yāyì shì hěn nán zhēnzhèng páijiě de.

If a person is misunderstood for a long time and is also unable to explain things clearly in time, that kind of repression is very hard to truly relieve.

Key point

Advanced passive sentences often shift attention from the doer to the affected subject and the resulting state.
