Shifting Topic or Setting a Limit with “zhìyú”

至于

zhìyú

How it works

至于 introduces a related subtopic, similar to "as for." It normally follows an established context rather than opening an unrelated discussion. In (还)不至于, it can also mean that a situation has not reached a stated degree or consequence.

The pattern

至于 + Topic, Clause; (还)不至于 + Verb Phrase / Clause

Example sentences

至于具体怎么安排,我们明天再讨论。

Zhìyú jùtǐ zěnme ānpái, wǒmen míngtiān zài tǎolùn.

As for the specific arrangements, we can discuss them tomorrow.

事情虽然麻烦,但还不至于完全解决不了。

Shìqing suīrán máfan, dàn hái bú zhìyú wánquán jiějué bùliǎo.

The situation is troublesome, but it is not completely impossible to resolve.

他只是迟到了十分钟,不至于取消会议。

Tā zhǐshì chídào le shí fēnzhōng, bú zhìyú qǔxiāo huìyì.

He was only ten minutes late; that is no reason to cancel the meeting.

Usage Note Do not confuse 至于 with 以至于. 至于 shifts topic or marks a degree limit; 以至于 introduces a consequence.
