Expressing “Even More” with “gèngjiā”

更加

gèngjiā

How it works

更加 (gèngjiā) means “even more,” “all the more,” or “to an even greater degree.” It is similar to 更 (gèng), but it usually sounds more formal, more complete, and more suitable for written or careful spoken Chinese.

It is often used when the speaker wants to show that one quality, feeling, or situation becomes stronger compared with before.

Example sentences

经过这次交流以后,我对这个问题的复杂性有了更加清楚的认识。

Jīngguò zhè cì jiāoliú yǐhòu, wǒ duì zhège wèntí de fùzáxìng yǒu le gèngjiā qīngchu de rènshi.

After this exchange, I gained an even clearer understanding of the complexity of this issue.

一个人经历得越多,往往会对别人的难处表现出更加深刻的理解。

Yí ge rén jīnglì de yuè duō, wǎngwǎng huì duì biérén de nánchù biǎoxiàn chū gèngjiā shēnkè de lǐjiě.

The more a person experiences, the more deeply he often understands the difficulties of others.

在这种情况下,盲目乐观不会解决问题,反而会让局面变得更加被动。

Zài zhè zhǒng qíngkuàng xià, mángmù lèguān bú huì jiějué wèntí, fǎn’ér huì ràng júmiàn biàn de gèngjiā bèidòng.

In this situation, blind optimism will not solve the problem; instead, it will make the situation even more passive.

Key point

更加 (gèngjiā) is often more formal and more explicit than plain 更 (gèng), especially in written explanation and analytical discussion.
