Expressing “Needless to say” with “gèng bùbì shuō”

更不必说

gèng bùbì shuō

How it works

更不必说 (gèng bùbì shuō) means “needless to say,” “let alone,” or “not to mention.” It is used when the first case is already clear enough, so a stronger or more obvious case does not even need to be mentioned.

It often appears in reasoning and comparison.

Example sentences

连最基本的事实都没有弄清楚,谈什么深入分析就更不必说了。

Lián zuì jīběn de shìshí dōu méiyǒu nòng qīngchu, tán shénme shēnrù fēnxī jiù gèng bùbì shuō le.

If the most basic facts have not even been made clear, then there is no need even to mention any deep analysis.

他平时连按时休息都很难做到,系统锻炼身体就更不必说了。

Tā píngshí lián ànshí xiūxi dōu hěn nán zuòdào, xìtǒng duànliàn shēntǐ jiù gèng bùbì shuō le.

He can hardly even rest on time in daily life, let alone exercise his body systematically.

这种复杂的问题连专业人士都需要反复研究,普通人一时看不明白就更不必说了。

Zhè zhǒng fùzá de wèntí lián zhuānyè rénshì dōu xūyào fǎnfù yánjiū, pǔtōng rén yìshí kàn bù míngbai jiù gèng bùbì shuō le.

Even professionals need repeated study for this kind of complex problem, so needless to say ordinary people may not understand it at once.

Key point

This expression strengthens comparison by moving from a strong case to an even stronger one.
