Advanced Adjectival Intensification
高级形容词强化结构
How it works
At HSK6 level, intensification goes beyond 很 (hěn) and 非常 (fēicháng). Advanced Chinese often uses varied structures to strengthen adjectives in more precise, nuanced, or elegant ways.
Common intensifying forms include:
极为 (jí wéi) extremely
分外 (fènwài) especially
异常 (yìcháng) unusually
格外 (géwài) particularly
尤为 (yóuwéi) especially
Example sentences
在那样紧张的环境下,他还能保持如此冷静,实在令人佩服。
It is genuinely impressive that he remained so calm under such tense circumstances.
经过这么长时间的努力,终于看到一点成果时,大家都显得格外激动。
After working hard for such a long time, when everyone finally saw some results, they all appeared particularly excited.
这次事件之所以引起广泛关注,是因为它所反映出来的问题异常复杂。
The reason this event drew widespread attention is that the problems it reflects are unusually complex.
Key point
Advanced intensification is closely related to style, precision, and discourse level. Different intensifiers often have different emotional or formal tones.
