Emphasizing Negation with “yòu”

又不 / 又没

yòu bù / yòu méi

How it works

又不 (yòu bù) and 又没 (yòu méi) are used to strengthen a negative statement. They often sound emotional, defensive, or slightly impatient in spoken Chinese.

They are very common in situations where the speaker wants to say:

it is not the case at all

there is no reason for that

I didn’t even do that

why treat it as if I did?

The difference

又不 (yòu bù) is usually used with general facts, habits, or future situations

又没 (yòu méi) is usually used with completed actions or past situations

The pattern

Subject + 又不 (yòu bù) + Verb / Adjective Subject + 又没 (yòu méi) + Verb

Example sentences

我又不认识他。

Wǒ yòu bù rènshi tā.

I do not even know him.

这件事又不难。

Zhè jiàn shì yòu bù nán.

This matter is not difficult at all.

我又没说你错。

Wǒ yòu méi shuō nǐ cuò.

I didn’t say you were wrong.

Key point

This pattern is often emotional. It is not just a neutral negative sentence.

Compare:

我不认识他。 Wǒ bù rènshi tā. I do not know him.

我又不认识他。 Wǒ yòu bù rènshi tā. I don’t even know him. This second sentence sounds more defensive or emphatic.
