Expressing “It Seems” with “hǎoxiàng”

好像

hǎoxiàng

How it works

好像 (hǎoxiàng) means “it seems,” “it looks like,” or “as if.” It is used when the speaker is not completely certain, but has an impression or guess.

The pattern

Subject + 好像 (hǎoxiàng) + Predicate or 好像 (hǎoxiàng) + Clause

Example sentences

他今天好像不太高兴。

Tā jīntiān hǎoxiàng bù tài gāoxìng.

He seems not very happy today.

外面好像下雨了。

Wàimiàn hǎoxiàng xiàyǔ le.

It seems to be raining outside.

她好像知道这件事。

Tā hǎoxiàng zhīdào zhè jiàn shì.

She seems to know about this matter.

Key point

好像 (hǎoxiàng) expresses uncertain judgment, so it is softer than making a direct statement.
