Expressing “Since” with “jìrán”

既然

jìrán

How it works

既然 (jìrán) means “since.” It introduces something already known or accepted, and then gives a logical result or suggestion.

The pattern

既然 (jìrán) + Clause 1, Clause 2

Example sentences

既然你已经决定了,就去做吧。

Jìrán nǐ yǐjīng juédìng le, jiù qù zuò ba.

Since you have already decided, go do it.

既然下雨了,我们就在家吧。

Jìrán xiàyǔ le, wǒmen jiù zài jiā ba.

Since it is raining, let’s stay at home.

既然大家都同意,那就这样吧。

Jìrán dàjiā dōu tóngyì, nà jiù zhèyàng ba.

Since everyone agrees, let’s do it this way.

Key point

This pattern usually introduces a conclusion that feels natural or logical.
