恐怕
How it works

I’m afraid...
probably
it may be that...
This word is useful when the speaker wants to sound softer, less direct, or more polite, especially when saying something negative, disappointing, or uncertain.
The pattern
恐怕 (kǒngpà) + Clause
Example sentences
他今天恐怕来不了了。
I’m afraid he cannot come today.
这件事恐怕没有那么简单。

Key point
恐怕 (kǒngpà) does not simply mean certainty. It usually shows the speaker’s judgment together with some hesitation or concern.
Compare:
他不会来了。 Tā bú huì lái le. He will not come.
