Expressing “Although” with “jǐnguǎn”

尽管

jǐnguǎn

How it works

尽管 (jǐnguǎn) means “although” or “even though.” It introduces a fact, but the result goes in another direction.

The pattern

尽管 (jǐnguǎn) + Clause 1, Clause 2

Example sentences

尽管很累,他还是继续工作。

Jǐnguǎn hěn lèi, tā háishi jìxù gōngzuò.

Although he was tired, he still continued working.

尽管天气不好,我们还是去了。

Jǐnguǎn tiānqì bù hǎo, wǒmen háishi qù le.

Although the weather was bad, we still went.

尽管我解释了,他还是不明白。

Jǐnguǎn wǒ jiěshì le, tā háishi bù míngbai.

Although I explained it, he still did not understand.

Key point

This is similar to 虽然 (suīrán), but often sounds a little more formal.
