Expressing “Don’t Need To” with “bùyòng”

不用

búyòng

How it works

不用 (búyòng) means “do not need to.” It is used when something is unnecessary.

It often sounds natural in advice, reassurance, or practical situations.

The pattern

Subject + 不用 (búyòng) + Verb Phrase

Example sentences

你不用担心。

Nǐ búyòng dānxīn.

You do not need to worry.

这件事你不用告诉他。

Zhè jiàn shì nǐ búyòng gàosu tā.

You do not need to tell him about this matter.

明天不用来得太早。

Míngtiān búyòng lái de tài zǎo.

You do not need to come too early tomorrow.

Key point

不用 (búyòng) expresses lack of necessity. It is different from 不能 (bù néng), which expresses impossibility or prohibition.
