Emphasizing the Doer of an Action with “yóu”

由

yóu

How it works

由 (yóu) means “by” and is used to emphasize who is responsible for an action or who carries it out.

It is more common in formal Chinese.

The pattern

Subject + 由 (yóu) + Person / Group + Verb

Example sentences

这件事由你负责。

Zhè jiàn shì yóu nǐ fùzé.

This matter is handled by you.

比赛由学校组织。

Bǐsài yóu xuéxiào zǔzhī.

The competition is organized by the school.

这个计划由大家一起完成。

Zhège jìhuà yóu dàjiā yìqǐ wánchéng.

This plan is completed by everyone together.

Key point

由 (yóu) often sounds more formal than simply saying who does something.
