Expressing “As a Result” with “jiéguǒ”
结果
How it works
结果 (jiéguǒ) is used to introduce the final result of a situation, especially when that result is different from what someone expected. In English, it is often close to:
as a result
in the end
but the result was...
This grammar point is very common when the speaker first describes an expectation, plan, or action, and then introduces what actually happened.
So 结果 (jiéguǒ) often carries a feeling of:
unexpected result
disappointing result
surprising outcome
final outcome after a process
The pattern
Example sentences
I thought he would come, but in the end he did not.
He prepared for a long time, but in the end he still did not pass the exam.
I originally wanted to sleep early, but in the end I stayed up late again.
Key point
结果 (jiéguǒ) is often used when the second part is different from expectation.
Compare:
Wǒ nǔlì xuéxí, suǒyǐ tōngguò le kǎoshì. I studied hard, so I passed the exam.
Wǒ nǔlì xuéxí, jiéguǒ háishi méi tōngguò kǎoshì. I studied hard, but in the end I still did not pass the exam.
The second one has a stronger feeling of contrast and disappointment.
