Expressing “In the End” with “dàodǐ”

到底

dàodǐ

How it works

到底 (dàodǐ) is often used in questions to add emphasis. It can mean:

exactly

after all

in the end

on earth

It is used when the speaker strongly wants a clear answer, or feels impatient, confused, surprised, or frustrated.

The pattern

到底 (dàodǐ) + Question Word / Clause

Example sentences

Nǐ dàodǐ qù bu qù?

Are you going or not, in the end?

Zhè jiàn shì dàodǐ shì shéi zuò de?

Who on earth did this?

Wǒ zhēn xiǎng zhīdào tā dàodǐ zài xiǎng shénme.

I really want to know what exactly he is thinking.

Key point

到底 (dàodǐ) often adds emotional force. It is not just a neutral question marker.

For example:

Tā qù nǎr le? Where did he go?

Tā dàodǐ qù nǎr le? Where on earth did he go?

The second sentence sounds much stronger.
