HSK 4 · VERSION 2.0#63

Using “zhe” for an Accompanying Action

着(伴随动作)

zhe (bànsuí dòngzuò)

How it works

Verb + 着 can present a continuing posture, manner, or accompanying action while the main action occurs. It does not require the two actions to carry equal focus.

The pattern

Verb + 着 (zhe) + Another Verb / Clause

Example sentences

他笑着走进来。

Tā xiàozhe zǒu jìnlái.

He walked in smiling.

她看着我说:“别担心。”

Tā kànzhe wǒ shuō: “Bié dānxīn.”

She looked at me and said, “Don’t worry.”

他拿着书站在门口。

Tā názhe shū zhàn zài ménkǒu.

He stood at the door holding a book.

Key point

Here 着 (zhe) does not simply mark a state. It connects an ongoing background action with another action.
