Emphasizing a Negation with “bìng”

并

bìng

How it works

When 并 (bìng) appears before 不 (bù) or 没 (méi), it strengthens the negative meaning. It often means:

really not

actually not

not at all

This pattern is common in formal speech and writing.

The pattern

Subject + 并 (bìng) + 不 (bù) / 没 (méi) + Predicate

Example sentences

我并不反对这个办法。

Wǒ bìng bù fǎnduì zhège bànfǎ.

I am not actually against this method.

事情并没有你想的那么难。

Shìqing bìng méiyǒu nǐ xiǎng de nàme nán.

Things are not as difficult as you think.

他并不是故意的。

Tā bìng bú shì gùyì de.

He did not do it on purpose.

Key point

并 (bìng) in this pattern is usually used with negative forms, not positive forms.
