Expressing “To Make Certain” with “qiānwàn”

千万

qiānwàn

How it works

千万 (qiānwàn) in this grammar point does not mean the number “ten million.” Instead, it is used in spoken and written Chinese to mean:

by all means

absolutely must

be sure to

never ever (with negative commands)

It is often used in strong advice, warnings, reminders, or emotional instructions.

The pattern

千万 (qiānwàn) + Verb / Command

Example sentences

你千万别迟到。

Nǐ qiānwàn bié chídào.

You absolutely must not be late.

这件事你千万要记住。

Zhè jiàn shì nǐ qiānwàn yào jìzhu.

You must remember this matter.

下雨了,出门千万带伞。

Xiàyǔ le, chūmén qiānwàn dài sǎn.

It is raining, so be sure to bring an umbrella.

Key point

This pattern is often emotional and strong. It is especially common with:

千万别……

千万要……

For example:

你千万别告诉他。 Nǐ qiānwàn bié gàosu tā. You absolutely must not tell him.
