HSK 4 · VERSION 2.0#51

Using “lái” as a Dummy Verb

来

lái

How it works

In this grammar point, 来 (lái) does not mean physical movement. Instead, it works like a light or dummy verb, meaning something like:

let...

be the one to...

do it by...

It is often used when someone takes responsibility for an action.

The pattern

Subject + 来 (lái) + Verb Phrase

Example sentences

让我来介绍一下。

Ràng wǒ lái jièshào yíxià.

Let me introduce it.

这个问题我来回答。

Zhège wèntí wǒ lái huídá.

I will answer this question.

谁来帮我一下?

Shéi lái bāng wǒ yíxià?

Who will help me for a moment?

Key point

Here 来 (lái) is not about coming physically. It is about taking the action.
