Expressing “In Addition” with “lìngwài”

另外

lìngwài

How it works

另外 (lìngwài) means “besides,” “in addition,” or “another.” It is often used when the speaker wants to add a separate point or mention another item.

Compared with 还有 (háiyǒu), 另外 (lìngwài) often sounds a little more organized or formal.

The pattern

另外 (lìngwài) + Clause / Noun

Example sentences

我们需要一个老师,另外还要一个翻译。

Wǒmen xūyào yí ge lǎoshī, lìngwài hái yào yí ge fānyì.

We need a teacher, and in addition we also need a translator.

这本书不错,你可以再看另外一本。

Zhè běn shū búcuò, nǐ kěyǐ zài kàn lìngwài yì běn.

This book is good, and you can also read another one.

另外,我还想说明一点。

Lìngwài, wǒ hái xiǎng shuōmíng yìdiǎn.

In addition, I would also like to explain one more point.

Key point

When 另外 (lìngwài) is used at the beginning of a sentence, it often introduces an additional point in a clear and organized way.
