Emphasizing a Small Amount with “jiù”

就

jiù

How it works

In this use, 就 (jiù) emphasizes that a number, amount, or quantity is small, limited, or less than expected.

It often gives the feeling of:

only this much

just this little

no more than this

The pattern

Subject + 就 (jiù) + Number / Quantity + Verb / Predicate

Example sentences

Wǒ jiù kàn le liǎng yè.

I only read two pages.

Zhège bān jiù sān ge rén.

This class only has three people.

Tā zuótiān wǎnshang jiù shuì le sì ge xiǎoshí.

He only slept four hours last night.

Key point

This 就 (jiù) is often used when the speaker thinks the amount is smaller than expected.

Compare:

Wǒ kàn le liǎng yè. I read two pages.

Wǒ jiù kàn le liǎng yè. I only read two pages.

The second sentence clearly emphasizes the small amount.
