Expressing “Had Better” with “zuìhǎo”

最好

zuìhǎo

How it works

最好 (zuìhǎo) means “had better” or “it is best to.” It is used to give suggestions, advice, or recommendations.

Compared with 还是 (háishi), 最好 (zuìhǎo) usually sounds more direct and clearer.

The pattern

Subject + 最好 (zuìhǎo) + Verb Phrase

Example sentences

你最好先问一下老师。

Nǐ zuìhǎo xiān wèn yíxià lǎoshī.

You had better ask the teacher first.

晚上最好不要喝太多咖啡。

Wǎnshang zuìhǎo búyào hē tài duō kāfēi.

You had better not drink too much coffee at night.

这件事最好早点决定。

Zhè jiàn shì zuìhǎo zǎodiǎn juédìng.

It is best to decide this matter earlier.

Key point

Both 还是 (háishi) and 最好 (zuìhǎo) can give advice, but the feeling is different.

还是 (háishi) often sounds softer and more conversational

最好 (zuìhǎo) sounds more direct and more like clear advice
