Potential Complement

可能补语

kěnéng bǔyǔ

How it works

Potential complements show whether the result of an action can or cannot be achieved.

The pattern

Verb + 得 (de) / 不 (bù) + Complement

Example sentences

这么小的字,我看不清。

Zhème xiǎo de zì, wǒ kànbuqīng.

The characters are so small that I cannot see them clearly.

这个问题太难,我说不出来。

Zhège wèntí tài nán, wǒ shuōbuchūlái.

This question is too difficult; I cannot express it.

你放心,我一定做得到。

Nǐ fàngxīn, wǒ yídìng zuòdedào.

Do not worry. I can definitely do it.

Key point

This pattern is very important because it shows ability in a result-oriented way.
