Expressing “A Bit Too”
……了点儿 / ……了一点儿 -...le diǎnr / ...le yìdiǎnr
How it works
This pattern is used when the speaker feels something is a little too much in degree. It often carries a mild complaint, dissatisfaction, or soft criticism.
It is commonly used with adjectives, especially when the degree is slightly beyond what is comfortable, expected, or appropriate.
The pattern
Adjective + 了点儿 (le diǎnr) Adjective + 了一点儿 (le yìdiǎnr)
Example sentences
这双鞋贵了点儿。
These shoes are a bit too expensive.
你今天来得晚了一点儿。
You came a little too late today.
这篇文章写得长了点儿,可以再简洁一些。
This article is a little too long; it can be made more concise.
Key point
This pattern does not just mean “a little.” It usually means “a little too...” with a slight negative feeling. That is why it is different from plain 一点儿 (yìdiǎnr) used for small amount or degree.
