HSK 5 · VERSION 2.0#45

Challenging a Verb with “shénme”

什么 + 动词

shénme + dòngcí

How it works

In spoken Chinese, 什么 (shénme) can appear before a verb to express impatience, dismissal, or rhetorical challenge. In this use, it does not literally mean “what.” Instead, it often means something like:

what...?

no need to...

why even...?

stop...

It is strongly emotional and conversational.

The pattern

什么 (shénme) + Verb

Example sentences

都已经决定了,还讨论什么讨论?

Dōu yǐjīng juédìng le, hái tǎolùn shénme tǎolùn?

Everything has already been decided, so what is there left to discuss?

这么晚了,别工作了,忙什么忙?

Zhème wǎn le, bié gōngzuò le, máng shénme máng?

It is already so late. Stop working. What are you still busy for?

他都把话说得这么清楚了,还有什么怀疑的?

Tā dōu bǎ huà shuō de zhème qīngchu le, hái yǒu shénme huáiyí de?

He has already explained everything so clearly, so what is there left to doubt?

Key point

This is a strongly spoken rhetorical pattern. It often expresses impatience or rejection.
