Comparing “xiǎnshì” and “xiǎnde”

显示 vs 显得

xiǎnshì vs xiǎnde

Comparison section · original #21 · level order #114

How it works

Both 显示 (xiǎnshì) and 显得 (xiǎnde) relate to appearance or showing something, but they are quite different.

显示 (xiǎnshì) means to display, show, or indicate.

显得 (xiǎnde) means to seem or appear in a certain way.

Example sentences

数据显示,这几年年轻人对这个行业的兴趣正在上升。

Shùjù xiǎnshì, zhè jǐ nián niánqīng rén duì zhège hángyè de xìngqù zhèngzài shàngshēng.

The data show that in recent years young people’s interest in this industry has been increasing.

他今天穿得特别正式,整个人都显得很精神。

Tā jīntiān chuān de tèbié zhèngshì, zhěng ge rén dōu xiǎnde hěn jīngshen.

He dressed very formally today and seemed very energetic overall.

调查结果显示,多数人还是愿意接受新的工作方式,不过真正实施起来,问题却比想象中显得更复杂。

Diàochá jiéguǒ xiǎnshì, duōshù rén háishi yuànyì jiēshòu xīn de gōngzuò fāngshì, búguò zhēnzhèng shíshī qǐlái, wèntí què bǐ xiǎngxiàng zhōng xiǎnde gèng fùzá.

The survey results show that most people are still willing to accept the new working style, but once it is actually implemented, the problems seem even more complicated than imagined.

Key point

显示 (xiǎnshì) is an action or indication; 显得 (xiǎnde) describes appearance or impression.
