Comparisons with “bǐqǐ”

比起

bǐqǐ

How it works

比起 (bǐqǐ) means “compared with...” It is used to introduce a comparison standard, often before explaining that one thing matters more, is more obvious, or is more important than another.

Compared with simple 比 (bǐ), 比起 (bǐqǐ) often sounds more discursive and more suitable for longer statements.

The pattern

比起 (bǐqǐ) + A, B + Predicate

Example sentences

比起结果,我更在意的是大家在这个过程当中学到了什么。

Bǐqǐ jiéguǒ, wǒ gèng zàiyì de shì dàjiā zài zhège guòchéng dāngzhōng xué dào le shénme.

Compared with the result, what I care about more is what everyone learned during the process.

比起大城市,我其实更喜欢生活节奏慢一点儿的地方。

Bǐqǐ dà chéngshì, wǒ qíshí gèng xǐhuan shēnghuó jiézòu màn yìdiǎnr de dìfang.

Compared with big cities, I actually prefer places with a slower pace of life.

比起抱怨,想办法解决问题才更重要。

Bǐqǐ bàoyuàn, xiǎng bànfǎ jiějué wèntí cái gèng zhòngyào.

Compared with complaining, finding a way to solve the problem is more important.

Key point

比起 (bǐqǐ) often introduces a comparison in a more thoughtful or argumentative sentence.
