Comparing “mùqián” and “xiànzài”

mùqián vs xiànzài

Comparison section · original #28 · level order #121

How it works

Both 目前 (mùqián) and 现在 (xiànzài) can refer to the present time, but they are used differently.

现在 (xiànzài) means now or at this moment. It is very common in daily speech and can refer to the immediate present or the current period.

目前 (mùqián) means at present or for the time being. It is more formal and is often used when describing a current situation in reports, analysis, official language, or more organized speech.

So the basic difference is:

现在 (xiànzài) = now, immediate or general present

目前 (mùqián) = at present, more formal and situation-based

Example sentences

Wǒ xiànzài méi shíjiān, děnghuìr zài gěi nǐ dǎ diànhuà.

I do not have time now. I’ll call you later.

Mùqián gōngsī de fāzhǎn qíngkuàng zǒngtǐ láishuō háishi bǐjiào wěndìng de.

At present, the company’s development is generally still quite stable.

Nǐ yàoshi xiànzài chūfā dehuà, dàgài yí ge xiǎoshí yǐhòu néng dào.

If you leave now, you will probably arrive in about an hour.

Mùqián wǒmen hái méiyǒu shōudào zhèngshì tōngzhī, suǒyǐ hěn duō ānpái dōu bù néng zuìhòu quèdìng.

At present, we still have not received the official notice, so many arrangements cannot be finally confirmed.

Key point

A simple rule:

现在 (xiànzài) is more natural in everyday conversation

目前 (mùqián) is more suitable for formal description of the current situation
