Comparisons with “bùrú”

不如

bùrú

How it works

不如 (bùrú) means “not as good as,” “not equal to,” or “might as well.” It has two common uses.

First, it can compare two things and say one is not as good as the other. Second, it can be used in suggestions meaning “it would be better to...”

The pattern

A + 不如 (bùrú) + B or 不如 (bùrú) + Verb Phrase

Example sentences

与其一直等别人决定,不如自己先把计划做好。

Yǔqí yìzhí děng biérén juédìng, bùrú zìjǐ xiān bǎ jìhuà zuò hǎo.

Rather than always waiting for others to decide, it would be better to first make the plan yourself.

这家饭店的服务虽然不错,可味道还是不如上次去的那家。

Zhè jiā fàndiàn de fúwù suīrán búcuò, kě wèidào háishi bùrú shàng cì qù de nà jiā.

Although the service at this restaurant is good, the taste is still not as good as the one we went to last time.

事情已经这样了,抱怨也没用,不如先想想下一步怎么办。

Shìqing yǐjīng zhèyàng le, bàoyuàn yě méi yòng, bùrú xiān xiǎngxiang xià yí bù zěnme bàn.

Things are already like this, and complaining is useless, so it would be better to first think about what to do next.

Key point

不如 (bùrú) is very flexible and useful in both comparisons and suggestions.
