Advanced Uses of “dōu”

都

dōu

How it works

At HSK5 level, 都 (dōu) is no longer only “all.” It can also be used to emphasize:

emphasis that a situation has already reached a certain degree

even under surprising conditions

emotional reaction to a situation

speaker’s judgment about whether something is already enough to justify a result

In many advanced sentences, 都 (dōu) is used not only to mean “all,” but to strengthen the whole statement.

The pattern

Subject / Topic + 都 (dōu) + Predicate

Example sentences

这么晚了,他都还没回来。

Zhème wǎn le, tā dōu hái méi huílái.

It is already so late, and he still has not come back.

你都知道了,为什么不早点告诉我?

Nǐ dōu zhīdào le, wèishénme bù zǎodiǎn gàosu wǒ?

You already knew, so why didn’t you tell me earlier?

这么简单的问题,你都不会?

Zhème jiǎndān de wèntí, nǐ dōu bú huì?

You can’t even do such a simple question?

Key point

In these advanced uses, 都 (dōu) often adds surprise, emphasis, complaint, or rhetorical force. It is not always directly translatable as “all.”
