Making “-ize / -ify” Verbs with “huà”

化

huà

How it works

化 (huà) is used as a suffix to form verbs meaning:

to turn into

to cause something to acquire a new state or quality

to modernize / simplify / standardize / etc.

It is especially common in formal, academic, or modern Chinese vocabulary.

Example sentences

这项工作最难的部分,就是如何把复杂的问题简单化。

Zhè xiàng gōngzuò zuì nán de bùfen, jiùshì rúhé bǎ fùzá de wèntí jiǎndān huà.

The hardest part of this task is how to simplify complex problems.

近年来,很多传统行业都在逐步信息化。

Jìnnián lái, hěn duō chuántǒng hángyè dōu zài zhúbù xìnxī huà.

In recent years, many traditional industries have gradually undergone digital transformation.

如果处理不当,原本很小的问题也可能被扩大化。

Rúguǒ chǔlǐ bùdàng, yuánběn hěn xiǎo de wèntí yě kěnéng bèi kuòdà huà.

If handled poorly, even a minor problem may be blown out of proportion.

Key point

化 (huà) often turns nouns or adjectives into verbs that describe change into a certain state.
