Advanced “le” After an Object

宾语后“了”

bīnyǔ hòu le

How it works

At HSK5 level, learners need to notice that 了 (le) does not always appear immediately after the verb. In some sentences, especially when the object is short or closely connected to the verb, 了 (le) can appear after the object.

This often happens when the speaker wants the verb-object phrase to stay together naturally.

The pattern

Verb + Object + 了 (le)

Example sentences

我已经看完这本书了,如果你需要的话可以拿去。

Wǒ yǐjīng kàn wán zhè běn shū le, rúguǒ nǐ xūyào dehuà kěyǐ ná qù.

I have already finished reading this book. If you need it, you can take it.

他昨天晚上写报告了,一直写到凌晨两点。

Tā zuótiān wǎnshang xiě bàogào le, yìzhí xiě dào língchén liǎng diǎn.

He worked on the report last night and kept writing until two in the morning.

我刚才给他打电话了,不过他没接。

Wǒ gāngcái gěi tā dǎ diànhuà le, búguò tā méi jiē.

I called him just now, but he did not answer.

Key point

This does not change the basic meaning of 了 (le). It is still marking completion or occurrence, but the sentence structure becomes more natural.
